Growing

It’s now been exactly 2 months and 3 days since I first brought home some clones and set up a small cannabis grow in my apartment in Denver.

So far things have been going extremely well, and now that the plants are in entering their 4th week in flower stage, I’m very happy to report that full buds have formed and continue to grow. My Third Dimension plant in particular has yielded some pretty seriously looking kolas, which are the big top nugs that you always see in High Times and other bud porn.

Starting to form some big kolas!

I’m continuing to use the same nutrients, and as I discussed last week, I’ve also been flushing the plants with just water. A good friend and grower told me to feed my plants something every day; this is the kind of growing advice that may work for him, but probably isn’t the best idea for a novice. Over-feeding plants can have a negative effect in the same way that under doing it will, and too many nutrients will create a salt build up in the plants roots. By simply feeding plants water instead of nutrients, you can help to prevent salt build up and make sure that the plants actually absorb everything you feed them. I’ve only been giving nutrients every 3-4 days, and on the off days I’ve just been giving a small amount of water to each plant. Since I started doing this about 10 days ago, I’ve noticed some big growth and can say that the plants look very healthy and green.

Not too much else to report on this week, thought I did get an electric juicer this weekend and have been making a smoothie every morning using a combination of fruits, veggies, and a few fan leaves from my plants.

There’s a few fan leaves in there, as well as lots of fruits and veggies!

On juicing: I’ve reached the conclusion that in order to really get a proper dose of THC-A, you need to grow lots of plants. Since a daily dose is somewhere between 10-15 fan leaves every day, having just a few plants doesn’t work because you’ll have to cut too much off the plant if you want to juice and still have it survive and flower normally. Cutting a plant is traumatic and it needs a few days to recover; since I only have 2 plants that are growing in a limited-space environment, I’m not able to cut off more then just a few at a time, and can only do so every few days.

I’m still using cannabis leaves in my daily juicing, but I’ve now come to terms with the fact that I’m not really going to be able to definitively know if juicing cannabis has a real effect because I simply don’t have the space to grow enough plants to juice every day and still have something to harvest smokeable bud. However, this is just a first attempt at growing and I’m sure I won’t live in a studio apartment forever….
