Growing

After almost a month of having my cannabis plants in flower, they’re still doing great and starting to produce some full, big buds with visible crystals on both the buds and fan leaves.

The smell is finally starting to be a bit of a concern. Being in a studio apartment and a small space in general, I knew full well going into this that there was going to be some problem with overwhelming marijuana smell. Luckily, I live in a decently populated apartment building that has a decent amount of other people cooking and doing other things that tend to smell (often times this also includes the distinctive 420 odor), so it hasn’t become an overtly overpowering smell just yet, and I’m pretty confident that I’ll be able to pull this off without having to do too much serious smell diversion.

At this point, the plants are growing healthily, which means that they’re starting to produce some really big fan leaves. These are the leaves that do not contain very much THC, and they have been a good addition to my daily juicing. As I discussed a bit last week, I’ve more or less given up on any serious cannabis juicing experiment since my two indoor plants will never be able to produce enough fan leaves for me to juice every single day without killing the plants. Pruning cannabis plants is definitely a good idea, but just about every grower I’ve ever spoken to about it says that like just about everything else with growing, moderation is usually best.

See how the small bud is behind and underneath the big fan leaf? Now that the bud is coming in, it’s time to prune the leaf.

However, these major fan leaves need to be cut off eventually anyway. Since the plant doesn’t know any better then to grow to shade itself from what it assumes are the elements, it’s going to produce these excess fan leaves that aren’t actually doing you any good. This is why it’s important to prune cannabis plants to increase yield. Pruning cannabis will make sure that the buds get the most amount of light and will end up growing dense buds.

At this point, I’m mostly on autopilot when it comes to most other growing tasks. Having already established a nutrient regimen I like, I’m sticking with it, and other than a good amount of water haven’t been changing anything else. Since both Triple Diesel and Third Dimension are sativa strains, I’m planning on leaving the plants for at least another 3 weeks before cutting down and harvesting my cannabis plants.
