This week we’re going to salute a staple piece of paraphernalia that every Weedist should have in their kit, the dugout. While a dugout isn’t nearly as sexy as some of the pieces we’ve featured in recent weeks, it is an essential part of your collection when you need to quickly and discretely smoke your ganja.

The Marijuana Dugout

A dugout, also known as a one-hitter or a bat, is very simply a box that stores your weed and a bat to smoke it out of. The bats are typically made out of metal, though you can use glass, which allows for better flavor. Some of the bats that people use actually look a bit like a baseball bat (hence the name), others are meant to look like a cancer stick (cigarette) to aid in your discrete smoking pleasure. On my recent summer vacation, the dugout was my go-to piece for discrete smoking on the patio, which was overlooked by a few other apartments. Not that it’s at all a problem in California for me to be smoking  my medicine in a public area, it’s just that I don’t need the stigma associated with smoking weed on my family vacation.

So why the name dugout? That’s pretty straight-forward, the name dugout evolved from the most basic form, the wood box with two chambers dug out inside of the wood box. While the specifics of the dugout change from model to model, the basics are the same: 2 chambers that have a closing lid, one for weed, the other is typically spring-loaded for your bat (so when you open the dugout, the bat pops up for easy access).

Other materials besides wood can be used for dugouts, such as stone and plastic, however Weedist RECOMMENDS NEVER USING A PLASTIC DUGOUT. The reason for this is the same reason that we don’t recommend using a plastic grinder, you may end up smoking small carinogenic plastic flakes without knowing it.
