My Favorite Strains: Jack Herer, Source: Weedist

Like many weedists fortunate enough to live in a state with access to (legal) high quality cannabis, I keep a wide range of strains on hand for a variety of uses and moods. Recently I picked up some gorgeous indoor-grown flowers of a racy sativa strain, Jack Herer.

Named after the “Emperor of Hemp”, Jack Herer was a tireless cannabis activist and author of The Emperor Wears No ClothesJack passed away at age 70 in 2010 after battling heart and stroke problems for a decade.  Fittingly, the Jack Herer strain is one of the most awarded and recognized strains out there.

These top-shelf nugs came from Patio Wellness in the Bay Area and will set you back $400 per ounce, but is absolutely a case of ‘you get what you pay for’. Here’s the mmj delivery service’s description of this batch of Jack Herer:

  • Genetics: Pure Jack Herer!!!! Grade A+
  • Smell: That super spicy jack smell that takes your breathe away when you inhale it through your nose, amazingly noticeable and unique.
  • Taste: Pretty much exactly how it smells. That spicy smell continues down your throat and gives you a very unique flavor that has a tangy/hashy aftertaste.
  • Buzz Type: Extremely racy high that makes you want to run a marathon.
  • Buzz Length: One bowl will have you going for around 3 hours no joke.
  • Overall: It is and continues to be one of our favorite strains out of all of them, Pure Jack Herer instantly becomes one of our top picks.

Many medical marijuana dispensaries say they have ‘pure Jack Herer’ and patients are often disappointed. After seeing and sampling my purchase, I invited a friend over to share this find. He lives in Berkeley and organically grows all of his own plants, a true connoisseur who wants to know exactly what he’s consuming and how it was grown. He told me a few times skeptically on the phone, “yeah yeah yeah, everyone says they have Jack Herer…”

I had rolled up a joint, but I said you need to see and smell the flowers first. As he opened my Jack Herer mason jar, I got an “Oh my….” This batch simply has crazy crazy terpenes, and an intoxicating sweet & spicy smell hits you as you open the jar. The nugs are dripping with frosty crystals.

A fellow high-tolerance smoker, he didn’t finish the joint with me as Jack Herer’s effects came on quickly! 3 hours later, straight through a non-stop Weedist brainstorming session, both of our minds were still racing. It hits really smoothly, leaving a pleasant taste and nice cooling effect in your mouth and throat.

My usual high energy strain is Super Lemon Haze, which I’ve said is like a shot of espresso to me. If SLH is like one shot to me, Jack Herer is like three shots of espresso that keep me focused and mentally and/or physically active. This is a strain I can use for a host of ‘daytime’ activities, from reading to chatting with the neighbors to hiking.

It goes without saying that Jack Herer is a prime wake and bake strain or one to share with folks who say “cannabis makes me sleepy, lazy, etc.” If you come across some legit Jack Herer and are fond of high energy sativas, don’t miss the opportunity to give it a taste!
