Dec-6-2012 celebration at the Space Needle (part of Seattle Center).

On December 6th hundreds of connoisseurs will celebrate the one year anniversary of legalization in Washington state by consuming cannabis legally at the Seattle Center. When first approached by the event’s organizer Ben Livingston – a Washington reporter, activist and ganjapreneur – Seattle Center officials balked at the proposal to permit a large celebration where cannabis would be openly consumed.

An event would be held at the Seattle Center either way, Ben warned. Many celebrated legalization there last year, defying state law to smoke openly underneath the Space Needle. So the choice was their’s: allow me to plan a celebration so you can help define the permissible behavior, or be prepared to deal with the crowd which shows up all on your own.

Next, Ben went into political diplomacy mode, enlisting support from Seattle’s Mayor and other officials. All of a sudden the answer became a reluctant yes, on the condition that the event start after the children’s museum closes at 5 pm. Ben’s response? You can’t have a 4:20 smoke sesh at 5 o’clock.

Against all odds Ben’s vision reigned supreme. When the major sponsor bailed at the last minute, the CannaLaw Group came to the rescue by providing the $2,000 needed to sign the contract, giving time to find other, smaller sponsors to make up the rest of the budget. The event is planned from 4:20 to 10 ish on Friday, December 6th and is open to all age 21 and over.

So, come one and come all, to celebrate cannabis legalization and the official recognition that we, as cannabis consumers, have the right to celebrate on our own terms, even on publicly owned lands such as the Seattle Center. For those of you who cannot make it, check back after the event to hear about my experience that day.
