Supporters of Question 1, the ballot initiative to remove penalties for adult marijuana possession in Portland, are launching a series of ads on METRO buses and bus shelters that highlight the relative safety of marijuana compared to alcohol. The Marijuana Policy Project, which purchased the ads, will launch the ad campaign with a media availability Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET, in front of its bus shelter ad at 189 Park Ave.

In one, a woman says, “[I]t’s less harmful to my body.” In another, a man says “[I]t doesn’t make me rowdy or reckless.” A third shows a woman saying, “[I]t is less toxic, so there’s no hangover.” Images of all of the ads are available here.

“Millions of adults choose to use marijuana for the same reasons other adults use alcohol, often to relax or socialize with friends,” said MPP Maine political director David Boyer. “Marijuana is less toxic, less harmful to the body, and less likely to contribute to acts of violence. Why should adults be punished for making the safer choice? We hope voters will ask themselves this question when they see Question 1 on this year’s ballot.”
