Gear

This week we scoured the web searching for glow-in-the-dark paraphernalia. There’s really no practical reason that I can come up with for owning one of these pieces except that they are cool and fun conversation pieces!

All of the pieces sourced above were found recently on Etsy.com. I wish I would have found the Hello Kitty piece for the recent Hello Kitty Piece of the Week!

How Glow in the Dark Paraphernalia Works

These pieces all glow in the dark by absorbing energy and then re-emitting it later as light, also known as photoluminescence. Each of the glass blowers has embedded photoluminescent material into parts of their glass pieces. Light is the most typical form of energy that is used in this cycle and all of these pieces require “charging” before their glow in the dark capabilities work. Essentially each piece needs to sit out in bright light for a period of time, and then when they are removed from the source, the glowing fun begins, but you probably already knew that. For charging, the brighter the better, so the sun is your best bet, though you probably won’t have a dark room to fully appreciate the piece if the sun is out. Halogen lights work really well for charging and you can also achieve a very cool effect using a blacklight. The UV light radiation really makes these pieces pop!
