Helmet Bongs

Besides the fact that these are some really cool pieces of intricate glasswork, what’s the fascination with helmet bongs? Well I guess it’s the baseline significance of a helmet as protective device, balanced by the art of the glass and the imagined crazy hits you’d get from a piece like this! The Star Wars geeks should really dig the Boba Fett helmet bong (we have also looked at other Star Wars pieces).

As for the fascination with helmets, there’s all kinds to choose from: most for protection, some ceremonial, a helmet is something we look at in history as a symbol of strength and trust. Artwork and helmets have always gone hand-in-hand. Who doesn’t love the Arms & Armor exhibit at the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art or the airbrushed helmets of the NHL goalies? Though I think it’s clear that these helmets are definitely what I would call ceremonial!

So, where does the word Helmet come from?

The word helmet is diminutive from helm, Medieval word for combat protective headgear. The Medieval great helm covers the whole head and often is accompanied with camail protecting throat and neck as well. Originally a helmet was a helm which covered the head only partly. – Wikipedia
