Weedists

Carl Sagan was an avid marijuana advocate and, in my personal opinion, one of the smartest people to ever live.

Early in his career he wrote about marijuana under a pseudonym, describing its physical effects and his mental response to it. He describes the creative flow of ideas it brings, and credits this flow for much of his work.

One idea led to another, and at the end of about an hour of extremely hard work I found I had written eleven short essays on a wide range of social, political, philosophical, and human biological topics.

For those who do not know who Carl Sagan is, I strongly suggest you watch his program “Cosmos.” Although we have learned a lot about astronomy since Carl died in 1996, no other scientist has so clearly communicated the fact that we humans are all on board the same ship, and desperately need to adapt a more compassionate attitude towards one another and towards all life. I’m personally very glad he was in charge of creating the interstellar message on Voyager, though any aliens that find it may think a little too highly of us as a species.

For the sake of space, I’ll only include Carl’s most famous quote about my favorite plant:

The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world.

It’s also worth noting that Carl Sagan’s wife Ann Druyan, a brilliant person in her own right, was President of NORML for many years and now serves on their advisory board.
