Hawaii Pro-Cannabis Advocates Form New Groups, source: http://medicalcannabiscoalitionhi.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/mcchi_logo_draft11.jpg?w=224&h=224The recent push by the 50th state’s senate to decriminalize personal use amounts of pot spurred the opening of two new organizations by Hawaii pro-cannabis advocates to advance its marijuana laws.

Fresh Approach Hawaii is comprised of “local organizations, businesses and individuals,” according to MauiNow.com. Its aim is to open a dialogue with the state’s policy makers to legalize marijuana and improve existing medical marijuana laws.

The Medical Cannabis Coalition of Hawai’i hopes to improve the state’s medical pot laws and will work with doctors, patients and caregivers.

Hawaii’s medical marijuana laws currently only allow patients with a doctor’s recommendations to grow their own medicine. There are no dispensaries in the state.

Two house bills the Hawaii pro-cannabis groups are currently eyeing include HB 667 HD2, which will amend the current medical marijuana laws to improve the confidentiality of patients and grow sites. It will also clarify regulations regarding certifying doctors and registration of patients.

The other, HB 668 HD2, will shift the responsibility of administering the medical pot program from the Department of Public Safety to the state’s Department of Health.

Both bills have passed Hawaii’s House of Representatives and will be reviewed by its senate.
