Mason Tvert of Marijuana Policy Project was recently on “Geraldo At Large” to talk about the “New Beer” ad that was pulled from a recent NASCAR event. Also on the program was Dr. Scott Teitelbaum, director of a rehabilitation center. The two discuss the safety of marijuana, and like most of the rehab profiteers we’ve seen, Teitelbaum’s main concern is the safety of kids, as if we’re not all concerned. Those kids can already get marijuana more easily than any other drug, thanks to prohibition.

Highlights from the video, Geraldo Talks Marijuana Legalization With Mason Tvert of MPP

  • MPP’s “New Beer” ad [0:18 mark]
  • Geraldo asks where the idea came from to run the ad at NASCAR [1:14 mark]
  • “We’re simply pointing out that marijuana is less toxic than alcohol, it doesn’t cause nearly the type of social problems that alcohol does, and it shouldn’t be a crime to use it [1:38 mark]
  • “Some of the ad was actually disingenuous and it’s not accurate. Although in terms of acute toxicity, alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana, marijuana certainly has numerous adverse health effects” -Teitelbaum. [3:19 mark]
  • “The doctor seems to be a little mixed up. If he’s truly concerned about public health, I do not understand why he would not want to allow adults to make the choice to use marijuana instead of alcohol. Research has said, the NIDA has found its far less addictive based on a number of indicators. Its far less toxic, alcohol contributes to 37,000 deaths per year based on use alone, marijuana contributes to 0. And Alcohol contributes to all sorts of violent crimes and marijuana doesn’t. Why would we prefer adults drink?” -Mason Tvert [5:44 mark]
  • “I still believe, it’s like gay marriage, the ship has sailed in terms of marijuana legalization.” -Geraldo Rivera [6:25 mark]
