My Favorite Strains: Grapefruit, Source: http://humboldtrelief.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/TrojanFanGrapefruit.jpgIf you want to try a cannabis strain that is true to her name inside and out, Grapefruit is one to try indubitably. It’s also a strain I have a close semi-personal relationship with, since it was the first strain my boyfriend obtained in Colorado back in 2004, and he has since passed his love for it onto me.

Grapefruit is a sativa dominant strain with a genetic lineage that is more difficult to trace than most other popular strains. I think this is due to two factors — the first, is that she’s an older strain and many people have changed her lineage, which results in reason two — the many different forms and phenotypes of the original Grapefruit strain.

My Favorite Strains: Grapefruit, Source: http://www.kindgreenbuds.com/gallery/california-grapefruit/california-grapefruit-3.jpgUpon some research, I can say with certainty that Grapefruit comes from Cinderella 99 — which seems to come from a great mix of popular strains including Jack Herer (Shiva Skunk x Northern Lights x Haze).

Jack Herer is also known by a different name (simply based on a different phenotype being expressed), Princess. With numerous back crosses between two different Princess strains (Princess x P.88), Cinderella 88 aka C88 is born.

Furthermore, with breeding between the two, Princess x C88, Cinderella 99 aka C99 is born. And because of the intense crossings and unknown popularity of the Princess strains, many breeders now say that Grapefruit is essentially C99 x Jack Herer, to simplify the lineage.

Grapefruit grows fast and yields a very plentiful harvest — and as she grows, she emits an intoxicating tropical aroma. Her flower buds are some of the most dense I’ve ever experienced and have little to no give when you squish and poke the nugs.

Each bundle is so dense and thick it comes across as the never-ending flower bud. This is also a great quality in conjunction with the fact that the effects of her medicine are long lasting and very potent. Again, this makes a little go a long way.

As soon as I open my stash jar, nothing but grapefruit hits my nose. Sweet, ruby red, citrus-goodness that literally makes my mouth water. As I break up her trichome rich flowers, a vanilla enhanced pine note is exchanged with the grapefruit smell, but does not fully overpower the citrus qualities. After my first hit, I get that nasal tingle and sharpness in my throat that many citrus strains are known for, along with a nice, musty grapefruit taste, that again, makes my mouth water.

I realize after only a few hits that I’ve set my pipe down and feel satisfied, happy-go-lucky, carefree… and hungry. So if you’re looking for cerebral stimulation and an emotional booster, or for appetite enhancing and nerve pain inhibiting effects — the sweet, citrus flower of Grapefruit is just for you.
