Miley Cyrus Smokes Weed on Stage During Miami Performance

Hannah Montana? More like Hasha Mon’Toka! Am I right? No? Sorry I’ll just… um, right, well, moving on! Former Disney child star and singer Miley Cyrus started this December off right, when she smoked weed on stage during a performance at the Raleigh Hotel in Miami, FL.

Miley’s antics have been under a lot of scrutiny since the critiques and slut shaming she experienced after releasing her music video for “Wrecking Ball,” and her infamous performance during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards with Robin Thicke. So it’s no surprise that Miley’s performance, while smoking weed on stage, has received a lot of media coverage.

Miley was the top-billed performer for the South Beach Art Basel Miami Beach show, where she performed a number of covers and opened up to the audience about the rough year she had. Miley performed covers of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Johnny Cash. She explained to the high-brow crowd that she understood they were serious about ‘real art’ and probably weren’t fans of her pop music style. “Usually I don’t smoke weed and drink, well that’s a lie… usually I don’t smoke weed and drink on show days, but I felt like it was fine in Miami,” Miley said.

“You thought (Art Basel) was a respected place where you could escape me,” said Miley, who spoke to the crowd about the dark year she’d had after twerking at the MTV Video Music Awards performance, and her beloved dog passing away. She explained during her performance that she had been in a dark place, and had come to realize that a lot of what she had been doing in her career seemed meaningless. “This year has constantly challenged me, and that’s why I started doing art,” Miley said before serenading the crowd with a macabre song she had written after receiving a bizarre dream, where a friend’s pet cat spoke to her.

The show also included a wide variety of eccentric and psychedelic costumes. Miley later wrapped herself in a giant rainbow, with a cutout for her head, while two performers dressed as giant mushrooms joined her on stage. The performance included bubbles floating across the stage and confetti falling from the stage. At one point, performers dressed as a shark and a penis ran across the stage. (Now come on, you know you’d have a blast toking up at this concert).

The venue included offstage art featuring a trio of nude women covered in body paint, clad only in giant wigs and black thigh-high boots. In trees surrounding the pool, plastic baby dolls wearing neon necklaces were tucked into the branches. Poolside cabana art installations displayed video images of Miley with a neon green, Oz-like background, alongside outlandish photo-shopped images of her and messages accusing her of torturing her real fans and urging that she “stop posting terrible art.” If this doesn’t sound like a concert made for eclectic stoners, then I don’t know what does.

At the end of the day, whatever you think of Miley Cyrus, she’s just a person like you and me trying to make it in this crazy world. So in the spirit of easy-going weedists, it’s best to stop all the gossip and just live and let live.
