Diablo Drafts without Drafts: Fantasy Football 2013! 2, Source: mag_jc_leaffb_576I’ve seen people talking about it in Seattle and Denver and even in Southern California. Monday Night Football and Dabs (of hash oil, that is), being offered as the perfect combination for enjoying the game in a relaxed and safe atmosphere.

It’s not just like a sports bar, it’s exactly like a sports bar! And it’s perfectly legal, as legal as such things get to be right now.

Frankly, I’m mystified at the way people are seizing on dabs as the specific thing to do during football games — why not “football blunts” or “football bongs” or whatever — but then, I’ve never quite understood football itself, so I’ll just take it on faith that dabs are a great match for some reason.

The important thing here is that there is very little as mainstream as football in this country, at least as far as sports. NASCAR and baseball come to mind, but I suspect baseball is going to be cannabis-friendly long before NASCAR, if only due to people like Tim Lincecum and Dock Ellis (who pitched a perfect game on LSD). The fact that the fans are spontaneously starting new rituals is important. Perhaps tailgate parties, which were also fan-driven, will start to have oil rigs and bongs, not just endless cases of beer!

So far, this could sound to many people like nothing more than some football-lovin’ hash-head hippies (except that most hippies don’t like football anyway), but wait, there’s more. Maybe you heard this already, but there have been more than a few football players getting “caught” lately doing drugs. Oh, I don’t mean dangerous drugs like cocaine or steroids or anything like that, I mean the medicinal, growable drug that is cannabis. And I suspect that most of them are finding the same kind of things that millions of other people already have: that cannabis is a safe, effective substance that helps with pain (including neuropathic pain), swelling, anxiety, and many other conditions that players are prone to when getting tossed around a football field.

Cannabis can even provide neuroprotective effects, which can be rather important right now, with the NFL increasing its research of concussions and their effects. The NFL is also potentially looking down the barrel of a gigantic class-action lawsuit from both current and former players, and wouldn’t it be great if they could find a safe, non-addictive medicine that could help with all of this?

We’re rapidly approaching the day when the average football fan might dream of sharing a bong with one of his football heroes… and it can happen!
