Families Continue to Come to Colorado for Cannabis Treatment

As knowledge of cannabis as a viable treatment for cancer and epilepsy for children becomes more accepted – even the FDA has now approved CBD to treat kids – families from less weed-friendly places continue to come to Colorado for cannabis treatment.

Among the latest families to uproot their lives in search of a cure for their kids are the Pogsons, from Canada. Kaitlyn, 13-months-old, suffers from severe seizures that sometimes last hours.

While Canada does have medical marijuana, it is not yet accessible for children. Kaitlyn’s father, Barry Pogson, decided he couldn’t wait for the laws to change:

We were just getting longer and longer seizures so we kind of made the decision that it’s just not going to come to Canada soon enough for us and there’s no sense waiting and we just went.

Kaitlyn immediately began sleeping better and has not needed emergency care since starting her cannabis treatment, according to her father. Kaitlyn’s cannabis treatment is an oil high in CBD, made from Charlotte’s Web.

Pogson has received some criticism for his decision to use CBD for his daughter. Many people remain concerned that CBD could interfere with development in children, and one such critic expressed his concerns. Arthur Schafer of the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics in Winnipeg expressed a concern for Kaitlyn’s development, but seemed more concerned that her cannabis treatment is not part of a CBD research project:

If these drugs are being given, shouldn’t they be given in a way that’s part of a test where we’re monitoring the results and comparing short term, medium term and long term what happens to these children?
