Maybe it’s all the Black Friday marketing blitz that has people thinking about the holidays and the “Season of Giving”, but a few cannabis users have recently written in asking if they can donate blood.
Thankfully, yes cannabis users can help in the critical task of donating blood.
The American Red Cross in their Common Questions about Donating Blood pamphlet state “While the Red Cross does not encourage the use of controlled substances, marijuana or alcohol use does not necessarily disqualify you from giving blood as long as you are feeling well. If you have EVER injected any illegal drugs, you can never give blood.”
The River Valley Kentucky Red Cross chapter says marijuana is “acceptable as long as you are not under the influence of marijuana at the time of donation.” In the Bay Area, a couple of the Weedist crew have donated blood with no issues.
So long as you’re not rolling in to donate blood having just used cannabis and being ‘under the influence’, it means any of the psychoactive THC compounds in your blood would have been broken down. Sorry blood recipients, you won’t get high off our blood!
