I love dabs. As a Colorado medical marijuana patient, I’m lucky to have access to some of the newest and most interesting ways to medicate. While good ol-fashioned green in a joint or bowl is always a great option, dabs using full melt concentrates are definitely a more efficient way to get high levels of cannabis in a more controlled dose.

In order to get a good dab hit using a nail, however, you’re going to need something more powerful than just your standard lighter to get going. That’s why I picked up a Newport Torch to use with my quartz nail and bong.

I’ve been using a quartz nail for the past several weeks, as it’s much more durable and overall makes for a better dab than a glass nail. Eventually I’d like to get a titanium nail or a domeless nail (or even a healthstone), but those looking to get a new dab setup with a strict budget should definitely consider getting a quartz over straight up glass.

Prior to upgrading my bong to a full-on dab pipe using a glass on glass converter piece, I had a small spoon and a tiny soldering torch; however, the larger surface called for something more efficient. The Newport gets my nail hot within about 20 seconds, which is definitely much quicker than the smaller flame, which could often take several minutes.

Good, solid flame and easy to use.

Retailing at somewhere around $40-50 depending on which headshop or medical marijuana dispensary you shop, this is a good deal for a solid torch. It is very easy to use and reload and definitely as good as the Vector, which many consider to be where the current bar for affordable torches lies (and which also happens to be at least $20 or so more expensive.) For those that enjoy dabs and want something easy to use, Newport is a great option.
