Reggie Watts is a sheer force of nature. A standup comedian with the skills set to be a both a music producer and MC/singer, Watts’ act combines surreal comedy with jaw-dropping musical chops that makes for some of the most entertaining standup in a very long time.

Known as the “house band” for Comedy Bang Bang and various roles in all sorts of things in the last few years, his new standup special “Why Shit So Crazy?” is the perfect showcase for his insane talent. It also happens to feature some of the best weedist-friendly content in recent memory; when something has enough trippy stuff packed into 53 minutes to make even your grandma trip balls, you know it’s gonna be great after (or during) a sesh.

Currently streaming on Netflix, this special contains footage shot at three different venues in New York City in late 2009, as well as a surreal scripted intro and outro and ending with Watt’s hilarious rap parody single “Fuck Shit Stack”, which sums up his genius perfectly.

Not only does he have some of the sickest beat boxing skills I’ve ever seen, but Watts has an amazing voice that allows him to create music in a wide variety of styles. Using a loop pedal and effects, he is able to sing every part that you’d need to create any kind of sound. One particularly 420-friendly tune has a strong reggae flavor, which is introduced with a riff on Reggie’s fondest for “doobage”, which contains the then obvious question: “doobie or not doobie?”

There are plenty of psychedelic effects and asides that trend toward Tim and Eric-style absurdist humor, as well as some incredibly high-minded bits, as well (including an bit where Reggie speaks rapidly in a variety of different languages, which is both impressive and incredibly funny when you’re too high to comprehend exactly what he’s saying). The sheer range Reggie Watts displays during just a minute or two on stage is incredible, and he seems like the kind of person who funny things just flow from naturally. Many of the songs must have required some rehearsal, but a good deal of his act is improvised, like he’s just kind of messing around while simultaneously blowing minds.

I’m just going to say it: I want to smoke a doobie with Reggie Watts. It’s going on my bucket list, cause this guy makes some of the most 420-friendly comedy I’ve ever seen.

Next time you’re looking for something to watch while high, get on Netflix and go right to “Why Shit So Crazy?” I promise you’ll love it.
