The Mist; Source: http://www.hitizle.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/The-Mist.jpgThe Mist was one of the movies that I watched while toking copious amounts of weed during spring break a few years ago. (Pretty much around the same time I fell for Breaking Bad.) It is based on a 1980 novella by Stephen King, and it’s written and directed by Frank Darabot. Darabot adapted The Shawshank Redemption (another one of my favorites) and The Green Mile earlier. (Yes he had a thing for Stephen King’s works.) He wanted to adapt The Mist into a movie for years, and he finally got his chance.

The cast features Marcia Gay Harden, Thomas Jane, Laurie Holden, and Jeffrey DeMunn. Everyone is living their normal lives when an oncoming mist traps them in the local grocery store. It turns out that the mist holds creatures in it from another dimension, and is the result of Project Arrowhead. Scientists accidentally left a doorway open while attempting to peer into other dimensions.

The film has a grim, dismal effect throughout, one that was familiar to me. Yes, Frank Darabot created The Walking Dead as well, and it shows in the bleakness of this movie as well as the fine acting. The Mist also contains future Walking Dead actors Laurie Holden, Melissa McBride, and Jeffrey DeMunn.

Check out The Mist (it’s even better after toking up) and let me know what you think!

This movie’s ending was somewhat controversial when it was released, as some saw it brutally tragic. It differs from King’s novella, and even he loved the theatrical ending.
