For the smokers looking to enjoy a complex mystery with both interpersonal and intense medical dramas mixed in, House fits the bill perfectly.

In the show, Dr. Gregory House – played by Hugh Laurie – leads a cutting-edge diagnostics team at a fictional Princeton University teaching hospital whose reputation draws patients when no one else can figure out what exactly is wrong with them.

Yet, Dr. House frequently comes to work high on painkillers, flirts outrageously with his female colleagues and subordinates, and tends to break all the rules on the books which would result in most doctors losing their medical license.

Dr. House routinely and boldly declares what is wrong with the patient and sticks to his assertion, even with little to no evidentiary support for his claim, often going as far as to initiate risky treatments, which at times have severe consequences for the patients. But in the end he always comes through, saving the lives of his patients and teaching his students how to be better diagnosticians along the way, so the hospital continues to employ and protect him despite his cantankerous, cocky attitude that drives his co-workers and students a bit crazy.

Depending on the intensity of your high, House might be too intense for you to follow at times. But even then, it’s a perfect show to get lost in, and laugh at the oftentimes ridiculous interpersonal dynamics. The intense medical situations threatening the lives of the patients will make all your problems seem so small by comparison.

With eight action-packed seasons, you’ll have plenty of time to go from admiring House’s medical brilliance, to being disgusted by his misanthropic [human-hating] attitude and everything in-between.
