Denver Apparently Host to First Terrestrial Cannabis Radio Station, Pot 107.1

Driving around with a friend after work last night, he flipped on the radio to 107.1, expecting the electronic dance music that usually plays on there. What we heard was a freakin’ country song. Confused, we scanned around to find something else; after flipping back a few minutes later, it was some random hip hop track. He immediately suggested that the station must be undergoing a format change. We joked (and were probably right) about how we must just be listening to some radio engineer’s iTunes on shuffle until the new format officially started up again.

Checking out all the hippest news on Denver’s westword.com this morning, I noticed this story confirming that 107.1 is, in fact, changing formats. The new format was what is really so unbelievable. You read the headline correctly: POT 107.1

It looks like it didn’t take very long after the recent passage of Amendment 64 for Colorado to start seeing cannabis in the mainstream. An all-cannabis related radio station does definitely seem interesting and, at the very least, a lot of fun.

Upon googling it, there is definitely a website that lists a partial playlist (almost all stereotypical stoner songs from Bob Marley, etc), DJ bios, videos, and a pretty detailed list of contacts including phone numbers, email addresses, and even a physical address. I tried the numbers listed, but they all just keep ringing and ringing. The station continues to be a mix of random tracks – I figured that it would change over on the first of the month. Their Facebook page has been very active, but was clearly only created earlier this week. It also contains a pretty skimp showing in the information section, with only this in the “About” section:

“Please welcome to Pot 107.1, the first of what will soon be a worldwide musical revolution. The fun, safe and legal music that is, Pot 107.1.”

The grammatical errors and half-assed marketing is certainly a bit suspect.

The Westword article did acknowledge that this may, in fact, be a hoax.  It does seem a little bit too good to be true. The website looks pretty legit, but is also honestly just too goofy to really lead me to fully believe that a bunch of radio big wigs would put major-station type money into a radio station. In an age when a really good looking website can be created by any 12 year old with a Macbook Pro, it’s not hard to imagine this all being an elaborate joke that some stoner is playing on us, getting our hopes up for a time when all the weedists out there can have a widespread voice. However, the optimist in me will be waiting by the radio.
