Yes, there are rules for pretty much everything in life. A little bit of weed smoking etiquette is highly recommended when toking with a group of people:

  • Pass to the left, or clockwise.
  • If you didn’t bring the weed or pay for it, don’t criticize it.
  • Puff puff pass. Naturally, this only applies to joints and blunts, as it’s acceptable to hit them twice (any more than that, and you are guilty of “bogarting“). One hit is sufficient with a bowl or bong. In this case, puff pass.
  • Don’t hold the joint while you run your mouth aimlessly. The j is still lit, remember? Don’t let it go out. Plus, other people are waiting to toke.
  • Don’t puff and run. It’s rude, and it’s also blatantly obvious that you were just visiting to mooch a toke.
  • Don’t hog the bong (see “puff puff pass”).
  • Avoid slobbering all over the joint.
  • You should return the favor to the person who supplied the weed by getting them high in the future.
  • Don’t steal the lighter!
  • Perhaps the most controversial weed smoking etiquette question is “Who gets to hit it first?” Some say that whoever does the rolling or packing should take the first hit. Others say that it is impolite to hit it first when you pack a bowl when there’s company around. In my experience, the packer passes it to the person on the left, who takes the initial hit.

So what do you think? Who should take the first hit during a group smoking session? Leave a comment with your thoughts (and any other weed smoking etiquette rules)!
