Thanks for checking out the final post covering the strains entered into the first annual Colorado cannabis championship, hosted by magazine The Hemp Connoisseur.

Here are my thoughts on the final three remaining strains:

S 6

Overall, I think that S6 was definitely in top 3 strains out of everything that was offered. The nug was tight and I could see the crystals on the bud without really having to look too closely. The smell was incredibly potent and was prominent from the time I opened the small baggie.

The taste was sweet and lit my palate right up as soon as the smoke entered my mouth. It was like the taste of soda with real sugar, or something like that: all of the sugar without any of the chemicals! The desired effect was definitely strong and stoney, with a very clean body high that lasted for very decent amount of time.

Because of the really great taste, this would obviously do well in a vaporizer. However, this is the kind of strain that I would recommend getting in bulk, or making your own clones out of the trimmings (if you either grow it yourself, or if you befriend a good grower.)

S 7

The flower looked pretty nice with a good mix of dark colored hairs, but the smell was pretty average. Taste wise, there wasn’t very much flavor in S7 at all, much like an average domestic beer might compare to anything better.

The effect was pretty good, with a good head high that also had a bit of relief feeling in the body. This is a strain that would probably be great to use in some homemade edibles, because the effect not overwhelming while still being noticeable (and read: enjoyable). If I had some more of this, I would probably grind it up and make some butter for a batch of muffins or cookies.

CBD 1

CBD1 was very hairy and looked great, and I definitely needed a grinder to break it all up.  Despite high marks for the appearance, the smell wasn’t very impressive, nor was the taste. This was probably the only strain whose taste seemed like it wouldn’t really change very much if one were to vary the method; it tasted pretty average out of the glass, and probably wouldn’t be much different in a vape or wrap.

When considering only the sheer medical effect, I think this was probably one of the best because it did exactly what CBD strains are designed to do: give a calming body high without impairing the mind. For anyone wanting to medicate for chronic body pain, this stuff would be great. While it certainly didn’t have a sleepy effect like an indica might, this would definitely not be a good strain to smoke before very alert.

There will be one final post about this competition, discussing the final award ceremony “Circ de Cannabis” event, being held Friday October 5 at Casselmans’ Bar and Venue in Denver.
