Grand Rapids residents voted in November to decriminalize minor marijuana offenses. People possessing up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana will receive a ticket rather than jail. The decriminalization measure does not offer protection for anyone with 4 or more previous offenses for controlled substances or anyone intending to sell marijuana.
Michigan Rep. Jeff Irwin introduced a marijuana decriminalization bill yesterday. The bill would make possession of up to an ounce a civil infraction rather than a misdemeanor. It is being co-sponsored by Marcia Hovey (D), Mike Shirkey (R) and Mike Callton (R).
