My Favorite Strains: Quasar, Source: http://swamis420.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/quasar.jpg

Quasar is an interesting strain for weedists and medical marijuana patients alike who are looking for something different.

At this point in marijuana strain history, there are several strains that I consider “the hits”, like (Sour) Diesel, Kush, and Haze; these are some of the most commonly found strains and often are the ones that get crossed with the most amount of other strains to create new hybrids.

As a professional budtender who spends 40+ hours a week talking about all these different strains and helping patients to select the one that most closely meets their needs, it’s becoming pretty exciting when I stumble upon a strain of bud that I haven’t yet tried. Especially if the smell is out of left field, new crosses and strains always intrigue me.

Quasar was definitely one of those strains.

A true hybrid in its effect, the genetics of Quasar are a bit hazy (no pun intended, though that would be a good one….). Most sources attribute it to an indica strain that was backcrossed with a sativa, and I believe this after trying it. It’s got an all-around feeling, with a buzzy kind of head high and very relaxing body high.

The smell, though certainly unique, actually turned me off a bit upon first contact. It’s got a very peppery, almost harsh smell that evens out a bit while actually smoking it. It’s got more of a sweeter taste, though definitely not anything too fruity or all around flavorful.

While the smell and taste was a bit funky for me personally, I know plenty of medical marijuana patients who enjoy the more exotic tasting herbs; Quasar will definitely satisfy any smoker looking for something pretty unique.

Hybrids are great strains because they are so versatile. I tried Quasar during the day and found it had a good, uplifting kind of effect; I then tried it later at night and it definitely didn’t keep me up the way a pure sativa would.

Quasar also held up pretty well in all smoking mediums: my first try was in a straight-up Zig Zag blunt and it tasted great and burned well, and later on I tried it straight in a bowl and still thought it was a great smoke.

While it’s great that so many strains are for specific times of day, it’s nice to have herb available that you know will be great for any situation.

If you come across Quasar during your next medical marijuana dispensary trip, try a gram or two if you like all around hybrid effects.
