New Strain of Cannabis? Nope, Just a New Strain of Hoax, Source: http://assets.hightimes.com/new_strain.jpgRecently, a seemingly large news story broke about a “new” strain of cannabis being discovered in Australia’s Blue Mountains. The alleged strain was reportedly cold-resistant, able to withstand high altitudes and could potentially lead to great benefits in cross-breeding. Well, as often happens on the internet, it turns out the whole story was nothing more than a strange hoax.

The report, which had faux quotes from “researchers” at the University of Sydney, where the single specimen supposedly resided, even went so far as to suggest there was a $10,000 reward to anyone who could bring them another sample of this new strain. Let’s hope no one went out of their way to take them up on the fictional offer.

Ultimately, there seems to be little explanation behind the hoax or why it was fabricated, and even less for how it came to be touted as truth across the news waves. Though surely disappointing for many botanists, growers and cannabis lovers alike, we can thank those who were diligent enough to dig into this report for bringing the truth to light.

As cannabis research and our understanding of its genetics moves forward in these exciting times, there is no room for misleading and inaccurate information. We know more about cannabis today than we likely ever have — let’s keep that trend moving forward and up.
