This week’s piece of the week is arguably the piece of the year. It’s no surprise it comes courtesy of heady glass virtuoso JP Toro. The Toro Macro XL is hands down the most universally acclaimed rig I’ve ever come across. Dabbers who don’t have one sulk and covet; dabbers who do won’t trade one for the world. Toro is NOT CHEAP, and good luck finding one of these guys in stock online. It looks hot, it cleans easy and it hits like a howitzer. Toro can be counted on to set trends and establish markets; B2 glass says Toro is “often imitated, but never duplicated”.

OK, I’ll stop now before this becomes yet another “Toro rules” rant (and yes he does btw). Instead, I will attempt to shed some light on the awesome. In my opinion, I think it’s a combo of simple design and great physics that sets this piece so high atop its pedestal. My buddy over at b2 Glass initially drew my attention to the varying tube diameters between the inside and outside of the “can”. That little bit of constriction adds some much appreciated draw to the smoke before it hits the percolator: this is HUGE. Macro XLs actually come in a variety of percolation styles. The piece shown above is a simple notched diffuser. Though there are crazier perc styles (especially from Toro) I chose this one to prove it’s not about the perc, it’s about the craftsmanship. Toro pieces are literally made with precision, form and function in mind. Premium raw glass + scientific engineering + precise assembly = best dab for your dollar.

I should mention I have still yet to dab off a Toro. Call me a romantic, but I am saving myself for one of my very own. Here is my Eleanor for any Gone in 60 Seconds fans. As Toro proclaims, “you know he had to hit a double…and he can hit it ALL DAYY LLONNG”.
