Vaporizers

As both an avid weedist and a big fan of any new technological gadget that seems interesting, I’m always looking for the best ways to medicate (or smoke, or get high, or whatever nomenclature you prefer). That’s why portable vaporizer pens are such an intriguing idea to me: having tried one before and heard about a few others, I was definitely excited when I first encountered the Synergy V Pen.

Much like the very popular G Pen from Grenco Science, the V Pen is a portable vaporizer pen that can vaporize any kind of hash oil; the Synergy takes it one step further by advertising the ability to also do full-melt concentrates like earwax/budder. While I enjoy the Kryptonie pen I purchased over the summer, I definitely got tired to having to get the same  cartridge refills full of oil. Both the G Pen and V Pen are great because the user has control over exactly what they’re smoking. Whether you make your own hash oil, like to collect oil syringes from different dispensaries, or like to try different wax, the V Pen seems to have the answer.

Retailing at only $55, this is a cheaper option then the G Pen by about $20; plus, this comes with two refillable chambers. Upon first unpacking the pen, I was definitely pleased with the large metal dabber, two concentrate jars, and overall design. The V Pen is designed with a cap and clip, just like a fountain pen, making it easy to transport it safely around and great for disguising as just a normal ink pen. To add to the on-the-go capability, it also has a locking mechanism to prevent wasting oil while in your pocket.

My plan was to have 1 of the chambers filled up with a few different kinds of hash oil. I purchased some hash oil syringes made by Organa Labs, which are high quality hash oil syringes that I’ve only ever tired before as a bowl topper, and also got a half gram oil syringe from Denver shop Caregivers 4 Life. The idea was to have a chamber ready to go with a combination of different hash oils to create a totally potent hybrid to smoke. I intended to keep the second chamber as clean as possible to only try new earwax; as a recent very big fan of wax and dabbing, I definitely have become a bit of a connoisseur for good concentrates. Unfortunately, my plans to have a great vaporizer pen were pretty quickly thwarted.

After spending a few minutes loading the oil around the sides of the vaporizer chamber, the first smoke from the pen was truly amazing. It hit very well, burned clean, and was totally easy to pass around during a great first session. Towards the end of that maiden voyage, I noticed that the last few hits were not nearly as strong as the first ones; I chalked this up to the battery needing some charge. After charging the battery for about an hour using the laptop USB attachment, I tried it again and got better results, but it still didn’t have the same power as that first sessions.

I found out after re-watching the Youtube video that I actually was wrong to load the oil around the vape chamber and should have only loaded it directly into it. Basically, you can only load a very small amount of oil or wax basically on top of the heating element; the outside of the chamber is only intended for use with a e-cigarette liquid. This means that the pen can only really support about a bowl’s worth of smoking at a time, which severely limits the ability of the pen to really be an “on the go” smoking device.

However, I decided to just load up a small amount to have throughout the day. This worked out just fine for a day or so, until about 6 or 7 days after I first purchased it. I got a ride back home with one of the grow hands I work with, who was hitting the pen when I started to smell burning plastic. Somehow, the pen started to overheat while he was in mid-hit and it continued to smoke even after he released the button. I immediately took the chamber off, revealing a hot mess of plastic on the bottom of the chamber and the top of the battery. Once the unit calmed down, the blue button stopped flashing and would not turn on again.

I tried to revive it by charging it for a bit, but to no avail. Even after giving it a day to cool off, it still would not work. I finally conceded that it was broken and called Synergy to request a replacement. After first getting some push-back from the customer service rep on the phone, I actually had to mention that I worked at the dispensary where I purchased the pen and that I actively sell their faulty product to people before I was almost immediately transferred to someone who gave me the address to send it back. They required that I send a $15 money order so cover shipping, ensuring me that the fee was so that they could use FedEx to get the replacement to me overnight.

I did get an email confirming a tracking number, but almost a week after I send it to them. It took another few days to arrive, and when it finally did I was excited to actually get to use again. Upon attaching the chamber, the new battery did absolutely nothing. While the battery certainly looked brand new, it did not turn on and I could not get anything from the pen.

I considered calling them to get another, but the same grow hand that shared my pen bought a V Pen for himself that did not work at all. So not only was his defective from the start, but I now had a negative experience with 2 of these same pens.

After getting over my initial anger and being out the money for the pen, the wasted oil, and the shipping, I started to worry about the few patients I had sold this pen to during the few days where I had a working V pen that I enjoyed. I checked with them, and they reported no problems with their units and seem happy with their purchase. However, I have to say that I was terribly disappointed with mine. Not only do I think that the design of the pen makes it hard to really get more then 1 or 2 good sessions (therefore making it not nearly as “portable” as advertised), I also did not think that it worked as well as some other pens I have tried before; this was all prior to my first pen breaking down after only a week or use, and the new one not working at all.

Despite the low price, I think that the makers of Synergy V Pen should seriously re-consider what their product really has to offer MMJ users, and need to do some more quality control before they continue to sell a sub-standard vaporizer pen.
