DJ Short’s “Flo”

Flo is one of my absolute favorites, and was also one of the first strains of cannabis I grew myself. Her beauty shows throughout her entire life cycle, from seedling to jar, and it makes her forever a queen, inside-and-out, to me and many weedists alike.

Flo, bred by DJ Short and Dutch Passion tag-team, has several stories of how she got her name, however, based on genetics alone, I can say it probably came from there. Her parents originate from [Oaxacan Gold x Chocolate Thai] which yields Purple Thai. Then, when crossed with Afghani, the Floral Line emerges, making Flo a nice hybrid of a 60/40 sativa dominant split.

This means that she can have her buds trimmed from her in several sessions, because about 10-20 days after that harvest, new buds will be formed, leading to a new crop after a second flowering period. Cool, right?

I additionally enjoy this characteristic for medicinal use beyond smoking — such as for edibles like Flo Energy by Keef Cola, or for juicing her leaves and newly formed buds. Flo is not the most potent based on THC levels alone, ranging from averages between 12-16%, but don’t let those figures fool you — her ‘Blue Family’ heritage and Afghani indica qualities mix together perfectly for a rounded effect.

Her plants’ bigger leaves (or “water leaves”) turn a pink color as she matures into the flowering cycle. Many who do not know this mistake it for a nutritional deficiency/excess rather than a phenotype that is favored among many growers.

As the buds themselves start to mature, a deep purple creeps up the lower lying calyxes of the buds that encase fiery red pistils. She smells very floral, like the faint scent still left on an almost-dried bouquet of flowers. But with that almost too “perfume-y” scent is a nicely made hash note. It is deep, like bubble or finger hash, and almost incense like. On top is a sweetness, like berries and pine with the end lingering on cedar notes.

Her taste follows suit, a nice, sweet, spicy earth taste of hash (really makes me crave the good stuff and forget about the butane extracted stuff).

After a bowl of Flo, I can say that her high is very energizing, motivating and “clean” feeling — a well-balanced hybrid. The come down was not bad, but I could tell there are definitely Afghani traits in her medicine as the carefree feeling led into a sense of relaxation with the euphoria that the sativa side brings along for the ride.

Even with today’s standards, when I bring my queen, Flo, back into the garden, I know her beauty will still shine through.
