Happythankyoumoreplease is a film I would describe as a spiritually up-lifting romantic comedy. This is not the average cliche cheesy romance you might expect. The first time I saw this film it made me seriously contemplate gratitude and finding authentic love.

This movie is all about true universal love that sees beauty in the soul and personality, rather than on the superficial outward appearance. The film follows the journey of several romantic relationships and the struggles each couple faces in their search for happiness and finding a sense of meaning in life.

The film centers on Sam Wexler (Josh Radnor), an aspiring novelist whose greatest shame as a writer is that he is just a suburban kid with good parents. On a fateful subway ride, Sam meets up with Rasheen, a foster care youth who was abandoned by his caretaker. Sam decides to indefinitely house and care for Rasheen (Michael Algieri) as he learns that children can teach you a lot more than you might think.

During the film Sam encounters love interest Mississippi (Kate Mara), a waitress and singer who turns out to be far more than Sam expected. The two attempt to start a relationship that is different than the relationships of their past, avoiding old habits and practices while trying to be new improved versions of themselves.

The story also feature’s Sam’s best friend Annie (Malin Åkerman), an Alopecia patient who although loved by many, struggles to love herself and accept the love of those around her. Other main characters include Sam’s cousin Mary Catherine (Zoe Kazan) and her boyfriend Charlie (Pablo Schreiber) as the couple faces the dilemma of leaving New York, their long cherished home.

This movie is great for a date night with your partner (and of course a lovingly packed bowl- or several) as the movie deals with the complex struggle of finding and understanding what real love is. The film will make you laugh, and probably cry, but in the end it will leave you filling more hopeful in your love endeavors and fulfilling your desire to love and be loved.

But this movie isn’t just for couples, when I first saw the film I was single and I still loved it. Since Valentine’s Day is coming up, I don’t want to leave the single folks out, because really, who needs to feel loved more on Valentine’s Day than those having to the face the onslaught of over-hyped gushy romance alone? Remember it’s just a commercial holiday designed to sell Hallmark cards and overpriced candies right? You can certainly enjoy this movie as much as anyone else would with the one Valentine that will always be there for you (I’m talking about weed of course).

Here’s wishing everyone many romantic tokes this Valentine’s Day.
