My Favorite Strains: Pine Star Kush, Source: Original Photography by Phe HarphaThis Pine Star Kush strain is an “in-house” strain bred and grown by Golden Leaf medical dispensary in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Ever in the area, they also have a recreational side too for those 21 and over to enjoy.

Pine Star Kush got her name from her genetic lineage, the notable Pine Tar Kush crossed with Alien Bubba (‘Star’ leaving hint to the ‘Alien’ background), leaving this particular strain true to indica dominant type characteristics and the ‘Kush’ name.

Pine Star Kush turned out to be a beautiful flower inside and out. Her light to dark green spectrum of color gives her nuggets an alluring 3D glow that invites closer inspection. Each calyx (or the part of the cannabis plant that comprises said “nugs” or “buds”) is densely covered with trichomes, leaving crevices of sparkling caves to be discovered when breaking apart the flower.

From each of these calyx, the pistils, commonly known as “red hairs” (short “plant biology 101” version for you) dangle over the edge of the bud, and are more of a chocolate brown or dark burnt orange color rather than bright red. I feel this contrast in color really allows the trichomes to stand out and highlight the physical radiance of this strain.

Following her namesake, Pine Star Kush smells exactly as you’d expect — pine tar or pine sap right from a living pine tree. Envision the peak of springtime — the pine trees are covered with pollen, you brush against it, break a few needles and even without trying, a soft, sweet hint of pine will linger up to your nose. That’s what this flower smells of. Upon a deeper breath, I can smell a finishing scent of hops mixed with peppery earth elements.

The taste is sweet, but not “candy” sweet. It has more of a refreshing sweetness like a cucumber can have. After the first few hits however, I got a very distinct dirt flavor — enjoyable dirt at that. I contemplated it a bit, but it dissipated quickly. As I got further into the joint, a green or red tea flavor took over, and it ended with the earthy quality raw honey can possess, with a touch of creaminess. Over half way through, these two different ends of the spectrum of taste merged into a light “organic” taste, with whispers of anise (or licorice) rounding out the flavor profile.

Pine Star Kush ended up being a very vibrant looking flower that carried her potency in stride with each puff. When I finished enjoying her, I realized I was not only mentally stimulated but my body was feeling quite nice as well. Now, I wasn’t down to go on a day hike or a night out, but it did turn out to be a good, “day at home to get things done” type strain. The type of strain where you can sit and relax if you want, or allow the medicine to perk you up and keep motivated to accomplish your tasks.

This is a very attractive feature in strains to me, because I know when my pain is alleviated and I have a nice energy from my cannabis, I am ready to take on the world for what it has to offer… even if it is staying at home and getting the cleaning done.

And Pine Star Kush allows me to do that — enjoy my medicine, and thus all aspects of my daily life, by simply being a well bred, grown and cured medicinal herb that holds true to the Kush lineage.
