My Favorite Strains: Cannalope Haze, Source: Original Photography by Phe HarphaCannalope Haze is a backbone to several strains I really enjoy, such as Chocolope, and stands true to the lineage from which it comes — an Original Haze mother that was bred with a Mexican Landrace sativa species, although the actual strain is hard to determine.

As an almost pure (90%) sativa based hybrid, Cannalope Haze has an extreme potency, known for reaching in the 20% range of THC, but the average tends to be more along 15-18%.

The cantaloupe smell that hits your nose as you first lean in for a smell is very sweet. It smells like a fresh cantaloupe fruit, but through the rind, as if you were at a farm stand trying to pick out the perfectly ripe melon. I cannot help to notice there is something else to this smell as well; minty, earthy, and piney all come to mind — this must be the Haze emerging to tickle my nose. I think it possibly smells like the shrub Arbor Vitae as you walk by after a rain, or in the morning dew. Together, these scents make it a very alluring and desirable flower.

These buds look “average,” but you can tell nature definitely made a treat for the cannabis connoisseurs upon closer inspection. I’d take this as a hint to the early/short flowering cycle of this strain, due to its appearance of a more airy nugget arrangement. It is nonetheless a beautiful flower. It is covered in sugary trichomes and long, light thin orange hairs — additional imagery for the ‘cantaloupe’ persona.

Hearkening back to how this strain smelled as I take a taste, it is so much sweeter tasting than it smells, leaving you to think of juicy melon as the hit crosses your lips. It somewhat reminds me of a fancy restaurant dessert I had that consisted of a melon variety with basil and handmade whipped cream; that blending of basil also comes through.

A word of advice before you enjoy Cannalope Haze — get your favorite beverage handy.  I experienced some of the most intense dry mouth from this strain. A cerebral high hit me before I could realize, uplifting me through an already tiresome day, and I am glad I did, as it gave me motivation to complete my daily tasks. This strain offers a “not too up, not too down” effect, though from experience, it can be a good bedtime strain for pain and stress relief, when higher levels of THC are present.

This is one strain my doctor recommended to me when I first turned to medicinal cannabis for fatigue, loss of appetite and less than satisfactory emotional feelings, while I was on more intense pharmaceutical therapies (low dose chemotherapy for severe, systemic rheumatoid arthritis). I can still see the effects of Cannalope Haze helping me through my day as it did years ago, though now that I am in a more healthy state (thanks to herbal medicine, natural ‘cures’, nutrition and exercise) I can enjoy the uplifting, euphoric effects that Cannalope Haze has to offer, in addition to her powerful physical medicinal effects.
