Great Music While High: This Will Destroy You, Source: http://events.news.ch/files/197/orig/11_ThisWillDestroyYou_Foto.jpgThis Will Destroy You is one of my all time favorite instrumental bands. Contrary to the band’s name, their music will soothe your soul and make you feel at peace with the world (at least that’s what it does for me). It is impossible to listen to their music and not have your emotions stirred by their powerful sound.

This Will Destroy You was formed in San Marcos, Texas in 2005 by four high school friends who had played in various bands together. Early in the bands development guitarist Geremy Galindo recorded vocals along with some of their tracks, but they decided it sounded awful and then later opted to write instrumental music, giving us the band we know today (thankfully for us). The band released their first EP, “Young Mountain,” which they recorded and produced themselves in 2005.

After positive reviews from critics on the EP the band was contacted by Magic Bullet Records and things have only gotten better for the group since then. In 2011 their album Tunnel Blanket entered the Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart claiming spot number 25. The band continues to write music and just released their third studio album “Another Language” this past September.

Some music can be listened to for some simple fun, but when you turn on This Will Destroy You, it becomes clear in a matter of seconds, this music means something. The music of TWDY can only be described as spiritual as it takes you on a scenic survey of the landscapes they paint with their heart piercing tones. I have seldom found music with as much emotional depth.

Many of their songs are quite lengthy and build up slowly, starting softly and then developing into brilliant heart stirring climaxes. Minimal percussion is used to set the pace of the almost formless songs. I would say their use of dynamics to invoke emotion is impressive, but I honestly don’t feel worthy to be ‘impressed’ by such perfect artistry, so instead I’ll just bask in their glorious sound.

I love listening to this band while driving on a mountain road or just relaxing in nature. Their music is perfect for when you just need to relax with some herb and take it slow. It is a great way to escape the fast pace of the modern world and just let yourself become enveloped in the masterpiece.

If any band is worth listening to an entire album from start to finish, it is this one. From my hippie stoner heart to yours readers, please take a listen.
