Pretentious Pot? I Don't Like the Sound of That, Source: http://smkbd.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/dt.common.streams.StreamServer.jpgI know I am gonna get shit for this, but as much as I love the Times and my being a native of New York, I don’t like this article.

If you didn’t read it, I will say it’s a great article about Colorado based Cannabranders. However, it’s not necessarily an original model and the article makes some pretty sweeping claims, as I don’t believe I’ve ever been to a dispensary full of dissheveled stoners with the aim of “scoring pot.” Flowers, combustion, edibles, cannabis, concentrates – this “mature” and professional handling of cannabis is common place to me and I agree with it. So why don’t I like this article?

Well, and it’s just my opinion, but this feels very “bougie” to me. Every photo in the article for some reason reminds me of pretentious restaurants taking shape. These women aren’t even from Manhattan, but the imagery just reeks of a slippery slope to A-list only pot clubs. Don’t get me wrong, that point is not made poignantly in the article, but feels very plausible to me. Exclusivity is a huge part of drinking and I must admit I take umbrage even to the slight suggestion it might be on its way to cannabis.

Cannabrand can bring the Jimmy Choo shoe boutique feel to weed and certainly has my blessing. But if three years from now that leads to coaching pot clubs to enforce a Jimmy Choo-esque dress code, that would suck. Call it dab fueled paranoia, but I could see myself showing up in sneakers and being turned away… with a $5,000 rig at my side.

“We want to show the world that normal, professional, successful people consume cannabis,” by assuming those people have an aesthetic and that never changes. Well, I hate to break it to you, but I’m as corporate a goon as you’ve ever seen, 9 to 5. I ALSO leave the house after hours with a cap adorned with dab pins and with a recycler hung around my neck. #YouDon’tKnowMe
