Great Music While High: Deafheaven, Source: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cbru34XYkF0/Ubaeg1wP7FI/AAAAAAAABo8/6YO2_TguQzk/s1600/Deafheaven.jpgDeafheaven emerged a few years ago with a style so fresh, it crossed genre boundaries. As an American black metal band hailing from San Francisco, CA, they had their work cut out for them. Classically, unless you are from Norway, you aren’t going to get much exposure in that scene. Deafheaven combatted that stereotype by adding shoegaze guitar work and extreme melody into their composition, proving they are a force to be reckoned with.

Sunbather, their newest album, has gotten so much critical acclaim, that it is a shock they are still considered to be flying ‘under the radar’. Signing to Deathwish Inc. is, in my opinion, on of the biggest shocks about this band. The record label, run by Jacob Bannon of Converge, is commonly considered to be strictly for hardcore and punk rock bands. However, Deafheaven has made Deathwish their home and is showing no sign of stopping their unrelenting drive to the top of the metal scene.

Sunbather is complete and shown to be right at home with extremely complex guitar and drum work as well as incredibly emotionally driven vocals. It is a great follow up to their self-titled demo and Roads to Judah. Sunbather takes you on an atmospheric journey through extreme ups and all time lows and proves to be a record to be contended with in ten, fifteen, even twenty years from now. A true classic if I have ever heard one, it shows all signs of an unspeakably brilliant album.

Although the band is recorded from just two individuals, George Clarke and Kerry McCoy, they have a full band that can bring all the intensity you would imagine of seeing this group at a live show. Check them out in a town near you, as they have been relentlessly touring since their inception some 5 years ago.
