Source Orb Wax, by @diablodabsSource Vapes Orb loaded with Girl Scout Cookies Wax

Love them or loathe them, concentrates are here to stay. As much I’d love to thank my beloved dome/nail for that, that simply isn’t the truth. Vape pens are hands down the vehicle that drove my errl into the mainstream. Whereas my nails/domes are perceived by most as either intimidating or just too strong, vape pens are always just right for concentrate first timers. When I got wind of a vape pen that hit like a dab, I had to try it out.

Source Vapes Orb

The Source Vapes Orb is a fairly standard atomizer 510 package, with a very innovative twist… DUAL COILS. It is a variable voltage (3.2v to 4.8v) power supply that couples with a unique double titanium coil atomizer. For those not familiar, this is really a key feature. Every other atomizer I have come across (too many) consists of a filament wrapped around a wick. The materials change, but the design and the hits are always the same. However, by doubling up on coils AND offering higher voltage; we have all it is that the nail/dome has on pens – HEAT. It is nothing short of genius that the designers of this rig decided to just double down. The result is the widest surface area I’ve ever seen on an atomizer. Combine that with a ridiculously big reservoir and a super sturdy solid aluminum mouth piece, you know I had to rip this thing.

The picture you see up top was my first load, premium girl scout cookies wax. That is roughly .2g and I set the pen to 4 volts, not topped out but certainly hotter. I’ll save the suspense and tell you now, this thing CHHIIEEFFFSS. I took down the load in one glorious 10-second pull. I then let the smoke bellow out like a dragon from Game of Thrones. The hit was legit people. It was not a dab, but it was damn close. In fact, I would go so far as to say it was on par with a small dab. I tasted the GSC’s right away and I was way lifted.

Instafire: Source Vapes ORB Big Wax Hit, by @diablodabs

That first hit was before bed, but it was very convincing. I was off the next day, so I really put my Orb through a workout. I am delighted to report the experience was the same if not better with Co2 oil. I turned the temp down a full volt (3v) and with a .5g loaded was ready for the day.

Every part of my road trip went off without a hitch. It was sturdy in my pocket and better still, no leaks. That is so huge people… let me tell you. If you haven’t had errl in clothes yet, don’t. Not only did the unit not leak under heavy movement, I never felt paranoid enough to check. The sturdiness of the unit cannot be understated. It’s a little tall, but it is still safe out in the wild. It only left a sweet subtle scent behind, but no stink in the air. This is the type of discretion needed for in-theater vaping ;)

I returned home as lifted as I left, thanks Orb! It was and continues to be a very satisfying score. You take the good with the bad, there were only a few things about the unit I was not too keen on, none of which are deal breakers.

Source Vapes Orb, by @diablodabs

Firstly, as much I love the upgraded coil, high voltage combo; that setup is a real oil vacuum. On the one hand, the .3 rip was gnarly; on the other hand, I didn’t mean to spend that much one snap. The same goes for Co2 oils. I guess the good rule of thumb is start low volt and experiment. You will get high at some level every time, hehe.

Secondly, my experience was not nearly as great with dry flowers and kief. My bud could not be more finely ground and kief is kief after all. My experience was that low- to mid-voltages were not impactful enough, while maxed out voltage def brought about combustion. Combustion of any sort stinks literally and figuratively with a vape pen. That said, I will point out that my bubble hash experience was phenomenal. We are blessed with full melt (dabbable) hashes here in Seattle and they suited the Orb just fine.

Lastly, I was just a little disappointed with the battery style and a lack of a tool. I’ve seen variable voltage batteries with power indicators on similarly priced units. This is not such a big deal at fixed voltage, but when you’re changing a gauge goes a long way. The lack of a tool is a pretty self-explanatory gripe. Yes, I do have every style that exists; no that should not have been assumed. Errl is a real pain in the ass to work with, especially for noobs.

Those admittedly petty differences aside, we gotta end on a high note (punny). I confidently endorse this unit as both a first and a second time vape purchase. If you don’t have one at all, your quest is complete. Source Orb gives little hits and huge ones, what more could you need. If you’re like me and you already had a Cloud or Micro G style pen, it’s time to upgrade. Once you go dual coil you won’t go back #chiefin.
