Tip for Buying Legal Weed in Colorado: You Might Have to Buy a Bag, Sorry

Here is a quick tip for buying legal weed in Colorado that will slightly affect the price of your product at checkout.

In the past several weeks, Colorado legal marijuana sales have gone extremely well. The first few weeks saw some long lines, yes, and there are still some limits on what you are able to buy at a time, but by and large this first month has gone off without any major issues. Those who were afraid that the Feds would come in and bust up legal marijuana retail stores are still holding their breaths, and the high taxes haven’t seemed to slow down the droves of folks coming to score their first legally-purchased herb.

One recent addition to the new protocols has been an interesting one to watch. As per state requirements, all marijuana products need to be placed into a child-safe container that must be sealed; during the first few weeks, this meant that we sealed product into a Mylar bag that looked like this:

But the state decided that those don’t cut it, so this new industry’s best option was to find bags like the one pictured at the top of the post.

The one issue with this kind of bag is that it doesn’t come cheap, and unfortunately the price has to be passed onto the consumer. So, if you go to purchase legal marijuana in Colorado, be prepared to pay just a few extra dollars for a bag (or as we called it, a “recreational exit package”).

At The Green Solution in Denver, this bag will cost $3. I’ve heard of other places that are charging upwards of $8. Here’s the thing though: the bags are reusable! So this can just be a one-time fee, as long as you remember to leave the bag in your car so that you never have to buy another one again. Some shops are also offering nicer bags that will last longer and can be used for other things like storing and transporting food, as they are insulated and actually pretty useful.

99% of customers have been very cool about the small extra fee for the bag, as they understand that it’s amazing that they can buy herb legally in a store. To the other 1% who have been testy about it at the register, all I can say is that this is the best way that the industry on the whole could think of to sell you legal marijuana. You still get to buy legal marijuana, so I’m not sure how else to make you feel better.
