As we all know, marijuana remains a schedule I narcotic according to our federal government, even though the feds have said that they will leave states to figure it out for themselves.

I’m going to save the whole “state vs. federal” thing for another post, because the only reason I bring it up is to say that the logical thing at this point is to have a guide available so that people can know where they stand. While there is certainly plenty of information around the Internet (Weedist’s state by state map of marijuana laws/penalties), there really isn’t one final authority for where to look up the laws in your area. While the city of Denver has just recently released a FAQ website, there are plenty of other folks in other states that would probably like to have something similar.

The app is simple: it’s a listing of all 50 states, DC, “USA Federal”, and even Mexico that allows you to click on each and see what the deal is. It breaks down the level of offense and what you will face as a penalty for buying, possessing, growing, distributing, etc.

It’s easy to navigate and well laid out, and so far hasn’t crashed or given me too many other problems during its use. The free version doesn’t contain information on “growing” or “selling” and does have banner ads at the bottom, but for $1.99 you can get the “pro” version and take care of that.

Overall, I like this app and think it’s a helpful resource for anyone who might be confused about exactly what the deal is in their area. My one complaint (and it seems that several others who left reviews on the page agree) is that some of the information is just not up to date. While it does have Colorado down pat, there are a few other states that are definitely not current. I do give the developers credit for owning up to it, however: several of these out-of-date entries contain a disclaimer in bright green up to stating: “ We are still completing legal research for this location. Information is accurate to leading online sources, but has not been verified according to statutes.”

Weed Laws is a great start to creating a one-stop place for all the marijuana rules in America. With things changing so quickly though, it’s seems like its a bit hard for them to keep up, so if you do decide to get this on your Android phone, just make sure to double check before getting into it with local law enforcement.
