“I’m not excited / but should I be / is this the fate that half of the world / has planned for me?”

Vampire Weekend are a rock band from New York who have built a large following around the world for their patented brand of preppy indie rock. Their first two albums were chock full of short post-punk tunes about Oxford Commas and other issues relevant to the upper crust.

Modern Vampires of the City

Their latest album, “Modern Vampires of the City” was a sleeper one for me this year; when I first heard it earlier this year, I couldn’t quite make up my mind about their grown-up sound and increased focus, but recently I’ve come to really enjoy this entire record, before or after a sessh.

Track two, “Unbelievers”, is easily the tightest, best written song of the year, as frontman Ezra Koenig is able to channel an entire generation’s feelings of frustration in just a few succinct lines. Track three, “Step”, is one of the best post-bowl songs of the year, as well, with a glorious mashup of several styles of music into one totally unique idea. Several songs feature some knockout production, especially in the way they layer the vocal parts throughout.

Many of the songs required a few listens for me to really grasp, including the devastating “Hannah Hunt” and the macabre yet extremely cool “Hudson.” Other tunes, like the dub-meets-harpsichord-with pitched vocals vibe on “Ya Hey” and sunny “Everlasting Arms” are instantly likeable earworms.

Listening back to it, it’s hard not to be struck by how Vampire Weekend have managed to combine so many different styles of music into a sound that is totally unique and yet instantly recognizable. It’s not hard to see why both Pitchfork and Rolling Stone named this album the best of the year. Weedists looking to upgrade their music selection should definitely give Vampire Weekend a listen.
