Aesliip’s Grow: Weeks 3 and 4

These past two weeks in my grow project have mostly involved keeping the conditions stable in order to keep these young plants happy and healthy.

I have a space heater and a fan set up on another digital timer to come on at various points in the day. The heater blows warm air across the door to my closet and the fan blows it in and around, but not directly on the plants. This way, the plants get warm, fresh air every couple of hours. I also have my windows cracked in order to keep it all fresh.

With the temperature and air situation taken care of, I moved on to get the plants into their permanent homes. I had trouble tracking down bigger flower pots. I suppose this is to be expected, since it’s not spring or summer right now. But damn, I went to Target, Lowes and Home Depot, and all I came home with was one flower pot.

Because of this, I was only able to move one of the plants into its final home. I chose the healthier one, and will move the second once I can track down another flower pot.

After the transplant, I set up another lamp slightly lower and to the side of the main light. This will allow light to reach the lower leaves, and I’m hoping this boosts the rate of growth. For this light, I used the same type of bulb as the main one.

I’m not sure how well the smaller plant is doing. It seems to be about four or five days behind the healthier one. This is mostly my fault due to some neglect: coming back home after the weekend, I found that the little guy had fallen over, and the leaves at the top had already bent over to face the light. It was probably like that for the whole weekend. I need to get it planted deeper into soil as soon as possible.

Other than that, everything seems to be going well. The long stem problem seems to be taken care of by burying the plant deeper, but it still may yet come back to bite me. Until then, I’ll just keep trying to provide the best conditions for them as they grow.

My next goals are to acquire another flower pot, move the little guy into his new home without doing too much damage, and getting a third and final light.
