Aesliip’s Grow: Germinating and Setting Up

A few weeks ago I found a bunch of seeds in some of my cannabis. Normally I wouldn’t like this, but in this case it was alright because I wanted them. It was time to start my first cannabis growing experiment (can’t let Prospero have all the home grow fun).

This new project is taking place in my closet, and I’m not really wanting to go buy a bunch of new, shiny equipment. I’m going to keep it low-key, inexpensive, and kind of ghetto.

Since this is my first time growing, I’m following a guide I found online. I germinated two seeds according to his guidelines, and put them in plastic solo cups to start.

At first, I didn’t have any potting soil until I found an ancient bag of soil-forming compost laying, forgotten and derelict, against the side of my house. I cut a hole in the side of it, and filled two baggies full of the half-frozen compost.

After germinating the seeds, I poked some holes in the bottom of the cups for drainage, then planted them and set them in the closet.

My first light was some cheapo power-saving flourescent bulb. I read somewhere online that these will work to get the seeds started, but the type of light they emit makes the seedlings focus on stem growth, so I’ll have to get a bulb that has a larger spectrum.

I got some sheets of aluminum foil and taped them to the walls in my closet to help light get reflected everywhere, then placed two baggies over the cups for humidity.

The set up

After two days the little seedlings began to sprout up. In the meantime, I’ll need to get real potting soil, a better bulb, some flower pots, and figure out the lighting schedule.
