The tuxedo of edible pieces.

Fruit and vegetables have been at it for years. Fruit versus vegetable juices, orchards versus gardens, chips versus fruit snacks, it’s Army vs. Navy before the famous rivalry became a trope. Recently, apple gave fruit the edge by doubling as a pipe, causing vegetables to fall back, regroup and strategize. Finally, vegetables launched a new campaign. The unlikely hero? Bell pepper.

The bell pepper is an excellent, ubiquitous specimen. Colorful, versatile and the chomped calling card of former Iron Chef Chairman Takeshi Kaga, bell peppers tend to reside in the backyard of green thumbs or crisp away in the refrigerator’s crisper in shades of green, yellow, orange or red  — the bell pepper stoplight. While the bell pepper rarely finds itself at the center of attention, when it does, it’s quite the, well, hit.

Bell Pepper Bubbler

Bell pepper bubblers are (to borrow a verbing from Jim Gaffigan) the tuxedo of edible pieces. Slightly more complicated than the three-step apple pipe, the bell pepper bubbler keeps well, hits smooth and looks fancy as designer fudge.

While there are plenty of elaborate add-ons (as crudely demonstrated above) to make the bell pepper bubbler look aesthetic and functional; these examples aren’t realistic. Bell pepper bubblers should not be anticipated; they work best as spontaneous, light bulb creations when no other option is available. Therefore, this set of instruction will adhere to a minimalist bubbler that requires no foresight.

The Wicked Witch Bubbler

Necessary tools:

  • 1 Green Bell Pepper
  • Knife Point
  • Access to water
  • Aluminum Foil
  • 1/2 Bic white pen shaft (optional)
  • Tape (optional)

Directions:

Cut a small hole halfway in between the stem and the blossom. If you have the pen shaft, use it to clear out any pepper flesh obstructing the hole. Rotate the pepper 90 degrees on its horizontal axis and repeat the process. Now, the bubbler has a carb and a mouthpiece. Cut around and remove the stem and the attached core membrane. Fill the pepper’s chamber to one-quarter of the chamber’s height. Origami a bowl shape that fits over the aperture where the stem was previously located. Make sure to reinforce the bowl so it stays secure when in use. Poke holes in the aluminum foil so tiny that a grape seed couldn’t pass through it. Five or Six should do it.

Now the newly constructed Wicked Witch (water, green, you get the idea) is ready for use. If you have the halved Bic shaft, fit it into the mouthpiece with tape to use as an extended mouthpiece; the more space between your mouth and the chamber water, the better. Check airflow and when satisfied, breathe deep.
