Hemp seeds are among the nutrient-dense healthy foods I incorporate into my regular diet. I eat hemp seeds shelled and raw, which has a slightly nutty flavor and slightly chewy texture.

I try to work in one to two tablespoons of hemp seed into my meals each day. For 60-120 calories, it provides a protein that contains all of the essential amino acids, make me feel full, a perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fat, fiber and numerous other great benefits.

I can eat hemp seeds straight from the bag, but I don’t enjoy the taste nearly as well as nuts, so I tend to add hemp seeds to other foods. Here are some of my favorite snacks and meals to add them to:

  1. Greek Yogurt: I’ll add two teaspoons of hemp seed, along with four to five teaspoons of pomegranate seeds to a serving of greek yogurt. Both seeds provide great taste and texture and help reduce the need for those higher sugar-packed greek yogurts. The three foods combined provides for some fantastic nutrition and taste.
  2. Green Salad: Any flavor of green, veggie salad with some type of bean and balsamic vinaigrette easily made at home, I find hemp seeds blend in quite well (much like quinoa.)
  3. Chili: Veggie or meat, yes please.
  4. Pasta with Red Sauce: I prefer it in tomato sauces with some spices to it (e.g. garlic or italian sausage) and/or veggie textures, but I’ll gladly add some to marinara as well.
  5. Chinese Dishes: From Chicken and Broccoli to Mongolian Beef.
  6. Indian Dishes: From Mattar Paneer to Chicken Tikka Masala.

There are no shortage of other snacks and meals to add hemp seeds to, from smoothies to soups to cereal. What are some of your favorite?
