Pulse Landscape

Alright guys, hopefully you’re not sick of hearing me talk about music I like to listen to while wandering around in the woods. I like original soundtracks (OST) because they remind me of good times I had playing those games. Along with the Skyrim OST, the Final Fantasy XIII OST is another playlist that takes mystical to a whole new level.

If you’ve never played FFXIII, or any Final Fantasy game, you’ll still find something to like in this OST. If you have played a Final Fantasy game, you may recognize the style of Masashi Hamauzu, who also composed the tracks to Final Fantasy X.

Final Fantasy XIII features two vastly different worlds, Cocoon and Gran Pulse. Cocoon is a floating world that is home to most of humanity. It is technologically advanced and futuristic. Gran Pulse, the world below, is wild, untamed, and ruled by the brutal struggle for survival. The soundtrack blends the essence of these two worlds nicely.

Final Fantasy XIII OST LightningFor example, Sulyya Springs has a mix of soft, classical-like music that embodies the nature of Gran Pulse; it also calls attention to Cocoon’s futurism with synthetic-like, edited lyrics. When I hear this song, I’m reminded of when the main characters first encounter Tajin’s Tower, a giant fallen tower located on Pulse. That music, excellent graphics, and position in the storyline made that part of the game really epic for me.

Speaking of epic, this soundtrack has plenty of epic boss battle music. My favorites including The Sabers Edge, Fighting Fate, and Born Anew. For more relaxed songs, check out Ragnarok, Lake Bresha, The Gapra Whitewood, and The Archylte Steppe.

I could go on and on about the songs I like, but if you smoke up and check out a few of these songs, they will speak for themselves.
