Colbert Report on Marijuana Legalization Re-Names States “Cheech-orado” and “Washing-Chong”

Who here smokes pot?

Last night on Comedy Central satirical news show The Colbert Report, The Rev. Sir Doctor Sen. Stephen T. Mos Def Colbert, D.F.A., Heavyweight Champion of the World** covered recent marijuana legalization efforts around the country. The bit has some great stoner jokes and is a very quick recap of the huge progress toward legalization that has taken place in the last year or so:

“…America is surrendering in the war on drugs. 21 states has legalized marijuana for medical purposes, and just last year, it was made legal for recreational purposes in Colorado and Washington state. Or should I say Cheech-orado and Washing-Chong.”

It included clips from Seattle’s Hemp Fest discussing how Seattle police passed out bags of Doritos with new recreational FAQs on the back, as well as Attorney General Eric Holder’s admission that the federal government would not go after states that had passed legalization measures, leading him to dub Holder “the mayor of cloud city”, an excellent Lando Calrissian reference.

Colbert also discussed Michigan’s recent proposal to tax marijuana and put the money toward road repair, setting up a great joke about what we might do to fix the cracks.

Stephen Colbert has always been a progressive and hilarious social commentator, and it’s great that he is bringing cannabis even further into the mainstream.
