Walt Whitman (1819 – 1892) was an American poet and essayist who was also a humanist. He is known as the father of free verse, and is considered to one of the most influential American poets. His work was known to be very controversial during its time.

There has been much analysis about his poetry and what it “means.” In fact, I studied Whitman in a few classes years back. But when it comes to poetry, I was taught by one professor that your personal interpretation is what matters. “Song of Myself” is considered an American epic poem for many reasons, but his words can be comprehended in the way that suits you best.

Whitman simply wanted to reach out to the common person. When he died at age 72, his funeral became a public spectacle, which is a shame considering that he believed that the best way to learn about poetry is to relax and listen to your own mind.

Here is one of my favorite excerpts from “Song of Myself”:
I depart as air, I shake my white locks at the runaway sun,
I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags.

I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.

You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.

Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged,
Missing me one place search another,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.

Fire up a bowl and give Walt Whitman a read!
