As reported on Politix, the Obama administration has imprisoned almost as many medical marijuana growers in the first 6.5 years of this administration, as in the entire 8 years under President George W. Bush.

  • During the entire 8 years under Bush, the federal government saw 163 medical marijuana cases, or about 20 per year.
  • With almost 1.5 years to go, the Obama administration has seen 143 cases, which works out to an average of 36 per year.

This trend is obviously scary for all Weedists in America, especially those of us who grow at home and/or work in the medical marijuana industry and medical marijuana dispensaries. It’s also a frightening statistic for those in Colorado and Washington, both states which are currently hashing out the finer details of recreational marijuana sales.

The majority of the cases involve growers in California, a state with a booming medical marijuana trade that still continues to see cases of growers like Charlie Lynch, who have done everything correctly, but still face federal drug charges.

Do you think that President Obama, whose personal marijuana use is well documented and 2008 campaign promise was to not squander federal resources on those complying with state medical marijuana laws, should do more to stop the federal government from going after medical marijuana growers that are following state law? Whether changing marijuana to a Schedule II drug via executive orderredirecting federal law enforcement priorities, or simply telling the 85% of the people, “I hear you and I am on your side” or Congress to “get off your fucking asses,” shouldn’t the President of the United States do something on medical marijuana reform?

How many more law abiding citizens need to sit in federal prison before something changes?
