Great Music While High: Fun

Fun is an indie rock band which has received international attention with the release of their second album. Few songs have spoken to me as personally as the song for which the album was named after, Some Nights. I first heard this song my senior year of my undergraduate education, a time when numerous major decisions became due all at once. The lyrics are about an intense inner struggle about the choices we are basing our life around. The music is moving, I always feel my emotions getting caught up in the rhythm and lyrics. It’s the type of song that can stop a good conversation dead, whether you are enjoying a little bud or not.

And then I watched the music video which is like a 4.5 minute movie about the inner struggles faced by Americans during the Civil War. I must admit I never picked up on that story line while listening to the lyrics, but its so obvious now. I watch the video frequently, it enhances the experience of the song.

My other favorite Fun songs are We are Young, featuring Janelle Monae, and Carry On. Some of their other stuff is enjoyable as well, but for me they aren’t one of those bands you make around. Instead, they are great additions to throw in when you want some great acoustics and exciting lyrics.
