Great Movies to Watch While High: Layer Cake, Source: http://static.wallpapers-cinema.com/wpp/thriller/layer_cake/image0.jpg

I love writing about great movies on weed; ironically, this 2004 film is about ecstasy. Layer Cake is a tough, British crime and drug drama starring Daniel Craig- in fact it was his break out role. It tells the tale of a savvy, stylish London coke wholesaler who is about to gracefully and successfully retire. Of course, this isn’t going to happen until the completion of one last job, a job involving a whole bunch of pills and some unsavory characters. That sounds clichéd, but it really isn’t.

This is the kind of flick that doesn’t introduce a single redeemable figure, but you still fall in love with the “good” guys. It is very similar to Guy Ritchie’s titans, Snatch and Lock, Stock…, but it is in no way a repeat experience- think of it as Guy Ritchie 2.0.  Layer Cake employs the same stonerific cinematography yet introduces a slightly more complex tale. I have seen it many times, and on this particular screening I was steady dosing my Cloud V w/ Upgraded Lighting Cart. (again); White Dawg shatter was the poison.

This is the kind of film I am confident enough recommending without summarizing and spoiling, especially with a theme as thought provoking as the plot is complex. Dabs of sativa are what this cake requires and you will need a few bites. This film sucks me in me every time it’s on because of its idea of drugs as a commodity.

The film opens with a superbly choreographed sequence of Daniel Craig’s character, shopping. Walking through a pharmacy, he imagines the shelves full of legalized and branded street drugs (i.e. French Connection cocaine and ecstasy, with the line being called FCUK reality) while delivering a soliloquy prophesying the inevitable legality of them when governments realize “how much fockin’ money there is to be made.” Scary right? Layer Cake was made nearly 10 years ago.

Layer Cake excels at exploring both the exponential and evolving attributes of power and greed. Drugs and money are always going to be seated at the head of the table. Though there are kingpins on top and junkies on the bottom, there are many fascinating characters on the rungs in between. Gnarly views from top to bottom are offered with this gem.

Toasty craniums will be very pleased with the fast pace and consistent delivery of sexy shit in this movie, literally and figuratively. Ass beatings are bad ass, accents are brilliant, gals are sexy, music’s surreal and the cussing will “…make your bollocks tingle.” So will the link below… #lightersup
