Weedist Destinations: Oregon Sand Dunes

I’d like to share one of my favorite stoner destinations with you guys: The Oregon Sand Dunes.

When you look at the images below, it may be hard to imagine that you are in the United States, let alone Oregon. They look like scenes from a far off Arabian desert or perhaps the scorched extraplanetary realms of sci-fi comic book art. But no, Weedists, what you’re looking at is truly in Oregon, just a few hours drive from Portland.

As a kid, my father would take my brother and I on two or three week road trips with Sacramento as our starting desination. Anytime one of our trips took us within in a day’s drive of the Oregon sand dunes we always made vocal our wishes to get there.

Situated on the Oregon coast, you can stand in one spot and if you look due east, you will see a vast cosmos of sunburnt sand; pull a 180 and look due west, all you will see is the relentless expanse of the Pacific ocean. Stand in that spot on a starry night and literally every direction you look (except perhaps down) conjures up the feeling of staring into eternity. It is an amazing spot for some soul searching, some quiet contemplation or, as I like to enjoy it, stoned, smiling, and overflowing with gratitude.

 

A good chunk of the Oregon sand dunes is either protected by a national or state park designation. For those who like more high-octane entertainment, the areas of the dunes that fall outside the protected boundaries are full of ATV, dirt bike, and sand-boarding opportunities. Personally I prefer the quiet peace of the protected lands.
